MAPUSA: A well-known historian and a group of nature lovers led a chipko movement and held a protest to save 200 coconut trees on a 2 km stretch at Guirim on Monday evening.
A group of nature lovers headed by well known historian Prajal Sakhardande hugged the coconut tress and started with their protest against cutting the 400 coconut tress with a slogan ” I am tree, please dont kill me” located on the stretch of Guirim by the government.
This particular stretch on the NH 17 from Panjim to Mapusa has added to the beauty of Goa and these coconut trees are standing tall for twenty years. After learning these would be chopped by the government to make four six lane project from Patradevi in North to Pollem in south Goa, this group came on to the street on Monday evening.
A year before, this group along with some political leaders had protested and saved these coconut trees and successfully managed to do so but the same is being repeated again by the Government. During their last protest, the government had promised that they would not chop these trees. There are altogether 400 coconut tree on this 2km stretch, 200 each on both the sides.
