CHORAO: United Citizens of Chorao (UCC) has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and Mayem MLA Anant Shet expressing its disappointment over the government’s failure to build a bridge connecting Chorao with the mainland.
Reminding the BJP of its election promise to build the bridge, the activist group has threatened to hold a dharna andolan in Panjim on January 12, during the upcoming assembly session, to show its displeasure.
The memorandum submitted on January 1, reminded the BJP of its promise to lay foundation stone for the bridge within six months of coming to power and complete the same within two years. However, it has been more than three and half years that the BJP is in power, yet the bridge has not seen the light of the day, it decried.
The activist group said that, in the past, it had submitted a number of memorandums to the government on the subject; besides, the Chorao villagers also staged a one-day hunger strike on October 28, last year.
Taking note of the people’s anger, Parsekar announced at a meeting of Mayem BJP workers held at Mulgao-Bicholim that the government would soon promulgate a land acquisition law on the lines of the Tamil Nadu State law in the upcoming assembly session, as land acquisition has become a difficult proposition, the group said, adding, however, beyond verbal utterance, the government has not taken any initiative in that direction.
UCC President Shrikrishna Haldankar said that the dharna andolan would be staged to press for introduction of a land acquisitions law in the assembly and early construction of the bridge.
