Chorao man identifies his attacker, villagers want arrest

CHORAO: A man, who was brutally assaulted near Madel Church on Saturday night, has identified the accused, while angry residents have demanded immediate arrest of the attacker.

In his statement to the police, Sunil Betkekar, who is undergoing medical treatment at the GMC, stated that the suspect is a resident of Orando-Madel, Chorao.
Speaking to Herald, Betkekar said he had closed his shop as usual at 9.30 pm and was proceeding on his scooter when the suspect stopped him and asked for lift to proceed to his residence at Orando-Madel, Chorao. “The suspect also told me that his motorcycle was punctured,” recalled the victim.
“As we were proceeding to his residence, the suspect asked me to take the internal road. As I was parking the scooter, the suspect hit an iron rod on my head from behind. I tried to run from the site, but fell some 50 mtrs from the site and I couldn’t recall what happened later,” Betkekar told Herald.
After Betkekar identified the suspect, angry locals on Monday marched to the residence of the accused at Orando-Madel, but he could not be found. The relatives told the locals that the accused was not at home.
Later, some villagers went to Old Goa police station and demanded immediate arrest of the suspect. The police have assured the locals that the culprit will be arrested within two days, informed the villagers.
According to villagers, the suspect is a government employee at Panjim.
When contacted, GMC officials said Betkekar is out of danger and is recovering from his injuries.
