CHORAO: A ferry broke down on the Chorao-Ribandar route on Monday morning, inconveniencing commuters and vehicles, which could be seen waiting in long queues. The River Navigation Department (RND) deputed two more ferries on the route in view of the huge crowd of passengers waiting at the Chorao ferry point.
Commuters stated that the RND should have should have provided better ferry services as the number of passengers was increasing, but it failed to do so. They added that the ferry facilities for the Chorao-Ribandar route, which is a very busy route, are old and bad, and that local representatives had neglected the matter for three years despite repeated requests from locals.
Incidentally, two ferries collided into each other near Ribandar jetty on Sunday morning, due to which a fisherman Francis suffered injuries and had to be rushed to the hospital. Locals have demanded that the RND compensate him as he is the lone earning member of his family.
