PORVORIM: Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao has demanded an official letter from the Ministry of Civil Aviation in a bid to prove to the people that the existing Dabolim airport will survive and operate even after the new airport at Mopa starts functioning. “A letter is needed from the Ministry of Civil Aviation otherwise it is very difficult for the people to believe that Dabolim airport will survive after Mopa comes up. A similar thing was said in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, but after the new airport began operating the old airports were shut down,” Alemao said on the floor of the House.
“Dabolim airport should not be closed but should survive for the benefit of South Goa tourism. Both the airports should remain. Mopa is so close to the border that the entire tourism will be shifted to the State of Maharashtra,” he said.
He also demanded scrapping of speed governors, especially for taxis. “Now with the four and six laning how can they drive at a speed of 60 kmph?” he asked.
Alemao also went to say that tourism needs to be developed in Benaulim constituency in a bid to attract tourists.
