MARGAO: Residents of migrant-inhabited Cine Lata, Margao, have
finally got a temporary respite from contaminated drinking water,
with the PWD supplying potable water to the residents via tankers
and also taking up repair work on the water pipeline to the
locality.
Herald had earlier this week highlighted the plight of the migrant
residents who had to contend with drinking water contaminated with
sewage for over two months now. Not only the PWD took up work of
repairing the pipeline – two months after the residents had first
drawn their attention of their plight – but ruling BJP leaders
also joined in to help the beleaguered residents.
When this reporter visited Cine Lata on Saturday, work was on
going on in full swing to repair the pipeline. An elderly woman
Tanava Zamuni said the residents are forced to fetch water from
neighbouring areas since the last two months. She said the supply
of water via tankers was a great relief, but requested PWD to
complete the ongoing repair work on a war footing.
The residents have called for a permanent solution to the
contaminated water problem plaguing the locality. Though the PWD
has taken up work on laying of a new water line to the locality,
the residents have called for expediting the work.
Another resident Irappa Madar said the residents have stopped
consuming the PWD tap water because of contamination.
Sources in the know informed that health officials also made their
presence felt in the locality and collected water samples for
testing.
Meanwhile, local BJP leader Sharmad Raiturcar used his good
offices with the PWD to provide tanker water to the beleaguered
residents as they were literally forced to consume the
contaminated water during the last two months.
Residents of the locality have now demanded that Chief Minister
Manohar Parrikar order a probe into the episode to find out the
exact reason behind the huge delay in repairing the water
pipeline.
“Two months is indeed a long time for the agencies to repair a
pipeline”, remarked a resident.
