PANJIM, APRIL 23
Heads of institutions have been directed to take due care while allotting subjects to teachers from the ensuing academic year as it has been observed an unfair practice of sharing of teaching of subject by more than one teacher for the same division is in vogue in many schools.
A circular of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has termed this practice improper and unacademic for the simple reason that the approach for any subject should be graded and sequential in line with the curriculum.
It states when a single teacher handles the subject there is no confusion as far as the approach to the subject and its grading are concerned. Sharing of the subject by more than one teacher causes confusion in the minds of students, it stated.
This apart, the circular states, the Board has also to confront with a peculiar situation wherein when more than one teacher is teaching in the same division, each teacher teaching the subject covers only part of it and will not be entirely familiar with the entire subject.
It states teachers invited for confidential work are often required to set question papers, assess, moderate or scrutinise answers of students in the entire subject. Teachers teaching part of the subject cannot do justice to this work both at school and Board levels, it mentions.
The circular, however, states only in unavoidable circumstances the teaching of a subject can be shared by teachers for more than one division with due care that each teacher completes teaching of full subject though shared in different divisions.
Institutions have been directed not to keep shuffling the allotment of subjects to teachers every year, lest they fail to acquire the required continuous experience for discharging confidential work of the Board in any given subject.
The circular further mentions allotment of subjects as far as possible should be done as per qualification acquired in the respective subject at graduation, post-graduation and degree levels.
