Amchem Goem Garbage Goem

On my recent visit to Goa, I was appalled at the condition of this once beautiful state.

The condition that is being referred to here is not about politics for a change but about garbage. The once scenic drive from Dabolim airport to Chorao Island was disgusting with the sight of garbage strewn every few kilometers and with the monsoons at its heaviest; the garbage invariably finds its way on to the roads. Upon reaching my beautiful island of Chorao, I thought that I had rid myself of the awful sight but to my surprise and utter dismay, the problem was no less here as well. This made me realize that the problem of waste disposal is a state wide one. It is very apparent that Goa lacks an effective waste disposal system. Is this how Goa greets its visitors? If Goa has to continue as a tourist destination, the Government has to address this problem immediately.
The Garbage issue in Goa is a recent development. In the past, each family would rear a few hogs considered as being natures waste disposal units. Now with rearing of such animals not being a common practice, waste disposal has become a serious problem. To add to this, mosquitoes proliferate in such conditions making us susceptible to malaria and dengue. The onus of solving this problem rests with each individual. If each family could spare a little space in their backyard, separate dry from wet waste, they will soon realize that they can produce precious organic manure through a system know as vermicomposting. This organic manure can then be utilized in our gardens or even sold. If each of us strictly adheres to this method of managing waste, we will once again be able to proudly say ‘Amche Goem sobit Goem’.
