I went to the Cuncolim Chieftain’s Memorial recently to pay my respects to the braves, but what I saw there was absolutely appalling.
The forecourt of the Martyrs Chapel outside was used to park the Cuncolim Municipal Council’s garbage trucks / utility vehicles and the space just outside the Martyrs memorial boundary wall was a veritable rubbish dump with cattle making merry and mucking up the whole place.
It is shocking that the holy, hallowed ground is being abominably desecrated by government agencies themselves. Of what use are the hollow periodic visits (mere photo ops) by the CM and ministers if we treat the memory of our liberators this way.
I request the state government to treat the memorial and its surroundings with the respect and dignity it deserves and maintain it accordingly.
