Goa has become a haven for beggars from neighbouring States and the government seems to have turned a blind eye to this menace. Earlier, one used to see beggars and squatters only at the railway stations and in city parks but now they have penetrated to the coastal villages too. One can see many vagrants on the road to Benaulim Beach, the cafe entrances, the parking area and on the beach. Most are aggressive hustlers and demand money as if it is their birthright. Some are alcoholics, pass lewd comments on women, and a veritable danger to society. Whatever happened to the anti-beggary laws and beggars’ homes? I appeal to the government to take immediate action.
