Borim VP urges PWD to reduce size of two accident-prone circles

SANTOSH NAIK

PONDA: The Borim Panchayat recently submitted a resolution to PWD office at Ponda for reducing the size of accident-prone two traffic circles at Borim.

Sarpanch Bhavna Naik and Deputy Sarpanch Sunil Sawkar said that the national highway engineers have assured them to begin the work on reducing the size of circles from next month.

“If needed, the narrow road should be widened at the accident prone circles,” Sawkar said.

“There was a demand from the locals since decade ago to reduce the size of the circles near Borim Bridge and Bythokhol Borim as it becomes difficult for the heavy vehicles’ drivers to negotiate turns sometimes resulting in overturning of their vehicles, causing serious injuries and fatalities,” he added.

He said, “Recently three Electricity Department linemen died after truck carrying the poles and staff overturned at Borim circle. At many places including one at Fatorda, the size of the circle is reduced.”

According to the locals, the two traffic circles located near Borim Bridge and another at Bythokhol on Margao-Ponda Highway, are accident prone, because the vehicles coming from Margao are negotiating the circles to proceed towards Ponda. This is because the size of circles is too big.

Sawkar also demanded to repair the road on Borim Bridge which is in bad shape due to the potholes and causes hardship to the commuters.
