Children suffer as Anganwadi building lies unused at Morlem

The structure was completed about six years ago, yet the Directorate of Women and Child Development, Government of Goa has not initiated action to finish the pending works and shift the children, who are now housed in a small rented room, without any facilities

VALPOI: It seems ironical that despite the Directorate of Women and Child Development, Government of Goa, constructing a new ‘Anganwadi’ building at Morlem village in Sattari almost six years ago, the building is still lying unused due to several administrative bottlenecks.
What is utterly disheartening is the fact that the Anganwadi is forced to run in a small rented room at Kassarwada in Morlem, where children are facing various hardships and problems.
The rented room does not have basic facilities and this has resulted in the falling number of students, who have been dissuaded to come here for various reasons, primarily because there is no proper place to sit. Now it is feared that many among the 17 children who come here everyday may decide not to return.
Villagers are agitated at this careless attitude of the Directorate of Women and Child Development and the Goa government, for not taking prudent decisions to bring relief to the students and the teachers, who try to inspire and coax students to be present everyday. A villager, who did not want to be named, said the building plan itself was faulty and constructed without keeping in mind various factors. For starts, there is partition, no proper kitchen or a decent wash room.
