The Chinchinim Citizen Committee (CCC) has submitted a memorandum to Cuncolim Police inspector Gurudas Kadam requesting for police personnel for traffic management at the Chinchinim market. In their meeting held with the Cuncolim police inspector, the committee members led by president Michael Beny Da Costa pointed out that this matter had featured at their recently convened meeting.
Their primary concern was about no proper parking carried out by two and four wheelers, which leads to congestion of traffic coming from both sides and they opined that the same could have been easier if police personnel intervene with proper traffic management.
Their second major demand was for the requirement of police personnel during peak hours for school children. The opening and closing time of the various schools from 7.30am to 2pm is a very tricky time and hence some amount of help is required in order to guide children to cross the roads.
“Various issues were discussed pertaining to the village and as such, the matter regarding haphazard parking/over speeding, proper traffic management were also discussed and hence with reference to these issues, we have requested the assistance and co-operation of the police in solving the problems caused,” said Michael.
It may be noted that the Chinchinim market is one of the busiest stretches as residents from Chinchinim, Assolna, Ambelim, Velim and Cutbona pass this stretch daily and even those connecting via the Assolna Bridge and the Orlim junction add to the number of vehicles that utilize this stretch of road. The market is also located near the church and several offices and residential areas are located near the market
“The biggest concern is with school children coming to the various schools in the area and parents who come to pick and drop the children. There is definitely a need for traffic police due to the heavy volume of traffic,” added CCC members.
It may be recalled that there have been a number of accidents that have also occurred on this road following which there have been calls from families of victims and residents of the area for better traffic management.
Cuncolim Police inspector Gurudas Kadam stated that they had taken cognizance of the views and concerns expressed by the villagers and would be taking up the issue on priority and that action has already been initiated to ensure better public safety.
Road Safety Organisation groups have also urged for better civic sense and responsibility on the part of commuters and for pedestrians while crossing that stretch.
