PONDA: From streets and nullahs, the plastic menace has now reached plantations. A farmer from Curti Khandepar, Philip Dias’ plantation has been flooded with plastic waste dumped into the adjacent nullah.
Dias who resides near Upper Bazaar has complained that his plantation is flooded with truck load of plastic as the nullah passing by the side of his plantation is choked with garbage at Bazzar Mallal.
Speaking to Herald, he said that he wants the Panchayat to save his plantation from this plastic menace. Heaps of plastic garbage is spread inside the plantation and he is worried about the trees.
The 75-year-old said, “The upstream of nullah has become a dumping ground for household waste and plastic, thus, it is choked and during heavy rains, the nullah overflows and the floating plastic is washed away into the plantation.”
Dias further said that the couple has taken great pains in the upkeep of the plantation. However, with the heaps of plastic they have new problems that are difficult to resolve by themselves.
He said, “Since the past two years I’m facing this problem. I’m unemployed and I depend on the plantation for my livelihood.”
He has urged the Curti Khandepar Panchayat to clean the nullah.
“If the plastic continues to remain inside my plantation, then it would damage the trees,” he added.
Stating that Curti ZP Member Priya Chari inspected the plantation, he said “Some labourers collected the garbage into bags, however heaps of garbage needs to be cleared to save my plantation.”
