The fishermen returning with their catch complain that their nets are a mixed bag. Along with the fish, the net traps numerous plastic waste most of which are bottles. This rubbish in their nets is a nuisance for the fisher folks as they have been saying that the plastic waste has been increasing year by year.
It’s an arduous task for them to segregate waste material from the nets and after separation this lies on the beaches, dirtying our beaches. Due to the lax cleanliness standards of the concerned authorities in general and the proliferation of single use products so popularised in the present day world, people carelessly discard plastic objects everywhere. All this scrap material gets accumulated in the gutters and once the monsoons are in, get washed into the rivers and ultimately lands in the sea which by its natural phenomenon throws it back on the beaches.
No beach in Goa is spared of this nuisance. Part of this scrap landing into the oceans can be eliminated if the civic authorities do a thorough cleaning of the gutters well before the monsoon. Why is the beach cleaning agencies not clearing up this filth lying on the beaches regularly? With nowhere to go due to the pandemic, people would like to breathe in the fresh air and walk on the beaches. Don’t they at least deserve a clean environment sans filth, chasing canines and idling cattle?
