The place at Verna shown in the photo, is the dangerous intersection where the new Western Bypass intersects the old bypass road and is a highly accident prone zone, which if remedial action is not taken at the earliest could be a recipe for disaster.
Going by the past experiences, a little ahead from here is the Utorda/Verna Junction where numerous accidents including some fatal ones have taken place. Only after the locals hit the roads, made the authorities see reason and rumblers were put in place making this place much safer now.
At the captioned new intersection there are no safety measures or signage in place making it a hotspot for disaster.
Why the authorities were in a tearing hurry to throw this road open for traffic without the bare minimum of precautions is a mystery. The vehicles coming from Cortalim side towards Margao take a sharp right turn through an illegal opening in the plastic barricades giving little scope for the speeding traffic coming from Verna towards Cortalim to react.
Add to this confusion is the traffic coming from Margao through this new bypass which also intersects at the place. What is required here is a small traffic circle and rumblers on either side to avoid a serious mishap. Are the authorities listening or waiting for disaster to happen before acting.
