It is said, government is for the people. Birth and death registrations are compulsory in law. But can’t we correct them if those were registered wrong? Yes, there are procedures. Even then how could concern official ignore and refuse public?
Here is an example. A local approached to a death registration office to correct her grandmother’s death certificate wherein her husband’s name was recorded in the column for her father’s name which was clear error. Father cannot be husband.
Now, as supporting documents, the local submitted marriage certificate and birth certificate of his father wherein it is clearly seen A and B are father and husband. In spite of that, the marriage certificate of late grandmother and grandfather was asked to produce but marriage certificate was lacking. Marriage was before independence.
In this case, what would common man do? How will he correct his grandmother’s death certificate?
In fact, an affidavit was also produced. But the officer is after marriage certificate only which is not available at the moment. The government must simplify rules to assist common people. Of course, government is for the people. However, everyone must get the benefit. Director of Statistics and Planning must issue such guidelines to Village Panchayat registrars.
