Recently, two policemen were noticed issuing fines to the traffic violators adjacent to Two Pillars at Queula Village in Ponda. Since everybody is equal before the law, not only the men but even women were taken to the task for not wearing a helmet and other offences.
Indeed, the drive stands to be most appropriate and needs to be continued for long. As a matter of fact, most of the two-wheeler riders proceeding along this location do not oblige to the traffic rules and regulations, more so, wearing of a helmet and controlling the speed limit.
Although, they carry a helmet, they seldom wear it due to absence of police/RTO officials at this internal location. Some riders indulge in reckless riding thereby raising the possibility of mishaps sooner or later.
Further, minor children are accustomed of riding a two-wheeler without having the much needed driving licence. In case, the cops man this area on regular basis, people would certainly follow traffic rules quite seriously so as to avoid payment of necessary fines. It is equally important to note that private bus operators often halt buses exactly at the junction thereby turning it dangerous for fellow travellers and pedestrians proceeding along this sensitive location. Buses can very well be halted at the authorised bus shelter constructed close to this junction along the Kapileshwari route.
In the presence of cops, the bus-operators too will exhibit some discipline in this regard. I appreciate the move on the part of higher officials at the Goa Police in introducing this drive at the above location and request them to see to it that the same continues on a permanent basis so that discipline is imbibed among the vehicle owners and bus-operators alike. Such a step would indeed go a long way in reducing mishaps at this area.
