Sixty-one students and three teachers of St Ann’s School, Tivim had a miraculous escape when their picnic bus went off the road on their return from Selaulim Dam at Oddar-Curchorem on December 1. Fortunately, 20 students escaped with minor injuries and only two persons – a teacher and a student were hospitalised as the locals came to their aid and called the police and fire personnel to rescue the students and teachers trapped inside the ill-fated bus.
Since it is that time of the year when most schools will take their students out for picnics or excursions, it is in the interest of the school managements and students to make sure that the buses hired by them are in good condition and see that drivers drive within the speed limits especially on interior and village roads to ensure the students’ safety.
The teachers and students need to keep the contact numbers of the police and fire departments in case of any emergency and these numbers need to be displayed on the school notice boards.
