Exposed transformers: A threat for pedestrians

On four consecutive days (i.e. from September 24 to 27), a transformer situated opposite Ganganath Shoppee at Varkhandem in Ponda was noticed in an exposed condition. The situation proved dangerous for pedestrians proceeding along this strategic location.
Had any pedestrian, especially young children, touched the live electrical wires at this particular transformer, it would certainly have resulted in harmful consequences. Although this serious matter poses a threat to precious human lives, still linesmen of the electricity department deputed at various locations seldom close the door of such exposed transformers at the appropriate time.
During recent years I have noticed many such instances in and around Ponda. In the initial stages, the electricity department had provided locking system for transformers so as to assure safety to innocent pedestrians. Perhaps this particular aspect seems to be neglected during recent times.
Of course, unless necessary locking system for transformers is assured, it will be difficult for this important department to bring the existing dangerous situation under firm control.
Linesmen found negligent in closing the door of transformers at the appropriate time should not be spared at any instance, but penalised at once without any discrimination. It is absolutely necessary that pedestrians are assured the much needed safety on a permanent basis.
Let us hope that higher officials at the electricity department would view this matter seriously and initiate prompt positive steps to deal with this serious matter. Prompt favourable action would be appreciated by all.
