With great fanfare and at a considerable cost to the tax-payer, the Margao Municipal Council gave a pair of bins to every household for segregation of wet/dry garbage at source. The people started doing so but gave up when they saw that the garbage collectors were putting everything in one container and then at the back of the same truck. The questions that beg an answer are: Is there any financial/performance audit of any scheme that involves public money and secondly how many trucks of garbage go to Sonsoddo dump and how many truckloads are processed on any given day. The garbage problem can never be solved if things continue the way they are. And all that Swacch Bharat will mean is a 0.5% tax burden on the rich and poor alike, on everything except the polluted air that we breathe.
