Govt must provide compensation for power cuts

Panjim City is seeing frequent power outages these days. These problems persist due to lack of proper network infrastructure and inadequate operation and maintenance of network, and this seems to be a perennial problem.

The situation can be improved by controlling the technical losses in the system through effective Energy Audit. Energy Audit is a mechanism to identify the points of leakages in the system by comparing the energy received and consumed in a network.

Energy Audit at the transformer level would further help in proactive monitoring of health of the transformer on a regular basis. Issues can be dealt with at an early stage before a breakdown occurs. There is a lack of periodic inspection to record the status of transformers.

The Government of Goa should implement compensation for power cuts.  The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission should enact new rules in a bid to ensure interruption-free power supply to the consumers.  If electricity board can impose fines on the consumers for not paying the electricity bill then similarly the department should pay compensation to the consumers for frequent power cuts. It should set a target for ensuring supply of quality and uninterrupted power to the consumers.
