Over the past two years illegal gaddas have sprung up on the Benaulim beach road on public land, vending everything from ros omelette to momos to vegetables to pork.
The encroachment is particularly noticeable at the Maria Hall crossing (which is practically a permanent fish market now) and Kadar supermarket crossroads. This inconveniences the village residents as cars and two wheelers belonging mostly to tourists are frequently parked on the roadside near the stalls while the owners eat or shop. Many a time buses coming from the Colva and Mobor side and proceeding towards Margao get stuck at the Maria Hall crossing due to the plethora of vehicles parked there at all hours of the day. Will the village panchayat / municipality remove these encroachments or are we Benaulikars doomed to suffer till kingdom come?
