Garbage!!! When you hear the word, immediately Saligao comes to the minds of people of Goa.
Wherever there is untreated/excess garbage, Saligao is the destination. Our beautiful village “Saligao” once famous for foxes has now been famous for garbage. Even the ‘term’ like ‘Garbage Capital of Goa’ is being used now.
Saligao has allowed the plant where most other villages are opposing, but that does not mean that there is Garbage plant in Saligao; all the garbage of Goa has to come to Saligao plant.
Think of the people residing in Saligao and around, how they are affected. When it started it was not for whole of Goa but for few villages around; but now, almost all the garbage comes to Saligao creating uneasiness to the villagers.
Why Saligao has to treat the Garbage of Goa, have some more plants in other villages, how long one can depend on one plant. When you make garbage, make arrangement to treat it as well and not dump it on others.
Everyone wants to keep their house clean and make others dirty; this should not be the attitude. Transportation of garbage is also has to be looked into; it should be transported in sealed containers or transported preferably at mid night, as, when the trucks pass by; foul smell spreads around and also drop the contents on the road while transporting; and suppose, if the vehicle breaks down on the way or accidently falls down then people in the vicinity have to bear the brunt, people can’t even have the food or stay in their house. Have more garbage plants and shorter distance of transportation. Treat your own garbage in your own backyard.
