Canacona: With increased police patrolling at most of the isolated areas in the Canacona Taluka, the fun seekers have now discovered the little known two kms bypass road leading to Dumane from Karmalghat, to hold the drinking sessions. The gathered youth while partying are screaming and swaying to the blaring sound of music in the dead of the nights, the locals allege.
The two-km Karmalghat-Dumane Road was built more than two decades ago passing through the forest when the work for a five-star hotel had started in Agonda. While this road was mainly built to create a shortcut for the movement of men, machinery and raw materials for the five-star resort and for their guests once it started operations but the construction work of the resort got abruptly stopped and the road was left to the mercy of miscreants.
As the road passes through the forest and has very few commuters passing even in the day time, the miscreants are dumping their garbage and have since been nicknamed as a “Trash Road”.
As if this was not enough, the locals now say that the miscreants mainly youth arrive in two and four wheelers every night with crates of beers and other drinks creating nuisance for the occupants of a few houses that are nearby.
Unable to bear the screaming and sounds of loud music, Alex Carpenter, an environmentalist of repute, who has been living close to this road, is perturbed by the screaming and playing of loud music by this unruly crowd which sometime swell to more than 30, he says.
“These guys descend on this road with cartoons of beers and other drinks and create all types of disturbance not only to us but to the wild life around,” Alex complained. “Recently, one night, these boys were drinking and creating nuisance on the road and unable to bear the disturbances I called all the contact numbers available to me of the local police, how come none of their numbers are functional? Alex asked.
Venting his anger at the unruly, uncontrolled partying in the area, Alex put up a post on social media saying that the scene in the night seems dreadful and apart from the noise and trash there could be an eminent law and order situation if this is not stopped forthwith.
“There was a group of up to 30 men shouting, throwing bottles and plastics into Forest Department areas and absolutely out of control after consuming alcohol or is it drugs?”
“For now I hope I have managed to move them on without putting myself at risk but how is it possible that police numbers are just not working at this time suddenly? It can have unintended dangerous consequences,” Alex wrote.
When Herald caught up with Police Inspector of Canacona Police Station Pravin Gawas, he said that they will take action on any activity which creates disturbance and nuisance in the area.
