Mapusa fish market in a super mess

The very threshold to the entrance of the Mapusa fish market is in a super mess. Debris of demolished structures dumped right at the doorsteps is an eyesore besides being unhygienic. The mess has been there for months together with the city fathers giving a care-a-damn attitude to the same. Waste water from the fish market perennially flows and gets stagnated here with flies and maggots squirming in thereby posing a health hazard.

Infact the market is ill-kempt and neither maintained nor washed thoroughly. There is slush and slurry all over the floor of the market and very often senior citizens and elderly fisherwomen have slipped and fallen over the slippery floor and never recovered.

A young neighbour of mine too fell down, dislocated his shoulder and his hip bone was fractured and had to be shifted to the District Hospital in and 108 ambulance. He has not recovered till date.

One fails to understand as to why the Mapusa Municipality which collects sopo and other taxes from fish vendors has failed to maintain the market? Of late, vendors here say that buyers have stayed away from visiting the market as they are scared for their lives. As a result, business here has suffered. Time the city fathers wake up and clean the market from time to time to avoid casualties in the future. Let better counsel prevail.
