An open truck reportedly belonging to Mapusa Municipal Council is seen regularly littering garbage all along the roads in Cunchelim which is a gross violation of not only of traffic rules and regulations but also the solid waste management norms.
The truck lifts mixed solid waste including dead animals reportedly from slum areas, and as it plies along, garbage spills over the road leading to foul smell and pollution in the area. The particular truck is neither covered by plastic from top nor does it have a tailgate.
This is a serious lapse on the part of the Mapusa Municipal Council. As per the laid down norms, any vehicle carrying solid waste ought to cover it from top and rear sides. The authorities ought to ensure that all norms are followed while transporting solid waste in trucks as it is becoming a health hazard. The Goa State Pollution Control Board should also step in and maintain a vigil on movement of such vehicles and if found violating norms then action should be initiated against the local body as per the existing laws
