New culvert at Vasco creates bottleneck

A newly built culvert on the main road near the Goa Shipyard entrance which has been thrown open to vehicles was expected to ease the flow of traffic on this busy road. But incidentally the culvert is creating a bottleneck along the road specially, at peak time when there is a large number of traffic on this road.

This is so because not all road users follow the diversion as shown by a large sign-board that has been put up. While many vehicles prefer to take the straight route (as seen in the photograph), others take the diversion. This results in a bottleneck at the other end where both roads meet as vehicles coming from both the roads converge at one point. But then road-users cannot be totally blamed for not taking the road over the new culvert as this culvert leads directly to a bus-bay. If a bus halts at this bus-bay it becomes impossible for heavy vehicles to pass through because of the narrowness of the road at the point where the bus-bay is located. It is pertinent to note that heavy vehicles which include trucks, tankers, and even trailers pass through these roads as they go to and from the Mormugao Harbour. These vehicles are forced to take the old route that does not pass over the culvert. To make matters worse no traffic cop is seen posted at this spot to control the traffic. The authorities need to take necessary steps to streamline the movement of traffic on this stretch of the road as several accidents have taken place at this spot in the past.
