The Indian Navy is known for its discipline and culture. But one incident reported on Monday 16 February 2015, at around 2 pm, near Nofra would put the Indian Navy or any officer to shame regarding the behaviour of two of their personnel.
When my friend was coming from the Dabolim airport, he saw two Indian Navy officers (Naval police) in an act that could be termed as very cruel, and very odd, that is not expected from the Naval officers.
On the main road, heading towards the Goa airport there is no ‘No Parking’ signboard near Nofra, and tourist taxi drivers regularly keep their vehicles by the side of the road, waiting for passengers. The vehicles are either ‘parked,’ which means all doors of the vehicle are locked and the driver is out; or ‘halt,’ which means the driver is inside the car. Even when there are no boards saying ‘No Parking’ or ‘No halting’’, the Naval police without authority started puncturing the tyres of the taxis and vehicles parked by the road.
The Navy Police have no jurisdiction on public or civil roads. It is indeed a shameful act by these navy personnel. Even if parking or halting is not allowed in the area, they cannot lock the car, or issue a chalan. At the most they can inform the traffic police to fine or the local body to put up a signboard. But what a shameful act committed by the two naval personnel? Is there anyone who can take action on this?
