Old Verna Highway in a dilapidated condition

VERNA: Every day the locals of Nagoa and Verna villages have to take the bumpy ride while using the old highway passing through the villages. The most recent asphalt layer has been washed off at many places along the road exposing the previous asphalt layer underneath. The loose gravel from the washed off layer has caused many bikes to skid on the road.
Resident of Nagoa Edwin Pinto informed that all the interior roads of the village are maintained well. “Only the old highway has been neglected probably since it comes under PWD-Highway”, he said. The motorcycle pilots who sit near the Verna church have a similar view. “Someone or the other falls every week”, said a pilot.
Many commuters still use the old highway while travelling between Panjim and Margao to avoid traffic along the Verna bypass. Some people drive on the opposite lane to avoid the potholes which pose a risk to oncoming traffic. The PWD officials claim that a tender has been floated and the work will begin soon.
