PONDA: Pondaites have expressed concern over the rising accidents due to stray cattle in Ponda Taluka.
“In absence of measures to control the growing number of cattle, the stray cattle is witnessed at several parts of Ponda Taluka especially on the internal roads and on Highway,” they claimed.
A local Viraj Sapre alleged that the government has spoken a lot about the cattle pound and schemes but nowhere such cattle pounds are built.
He said, “The government needs to at least send these stray cattle to Goshala. Due to lack of sterilisation measures, the stray cattle and dog population has increased. Few months ago, a bike rider died on the town road after dog suddenly came under the wheel. Recently, two accidents occurred on account of stray cattle occupying the road.”
Another local, Naresh Naik said, “In the past, several times, herds of stray cattle sitting on national highway at Dharbandora, Khandepar were crushed to death. There is a need for sterilisation to prevent growth of stray cattle. Some people on humanitarian grounds feed the stray cattle but except this most cattle are starved as no provision is made to feed them.”
Sandesh Naik said, “The cattle are often seen causing road blockades by sitting in the middle of road as well as herds are seen walking along the road inviting accidents. The cattle menace is witnessed in Ponda at Tisk junction, market and Farmagudi circle. Besides, the menace is also noticed on Marcaim, Kavlem, Bandora, Priol and Shiroda roads.”
