Goa’s electricity department needs to wake up to the demands of its electricity consumers. The hike in electricity charges deserves fierce criticism for not meeting the expectations of a growing population.
The present infrastructure fails to meet the required supply for domestic consumption units like air conditioners, water heaters, and other electrical appliances; most of these are operated on a single face connection. There are no
norms set by the department.
Most transformers serving the community are old – some around thirty years. As a result, the local department personnel have to work twice as hard to satisfy the consumers. If they don’t, they have to face the consumers’ wrath.
The Goa government, past or present, is more interested in satisfying the needs of the industries around Goa rather than its own people.
The people have to suffer power failures because of these power-guzzling industries. Moreover, the monsoons will arrive soon, and it will disrupt the power supply even more.
To justify the hike in electricity charges, the department must ensure regular supply to the consumers. It must also ensure prompt service by the local personnel, who care little for the consumers. More importantly, the government should ensure adequate manpower to meet the needs of the growing population.
