Proper traffic signs required in State

The State is lacking in proper traffic signage despite the density of vehicles on the roads being one of the highest in India.

Both, the road safety and general informative signage is given the short shrift by city and town fathers. It must be erected at the interfaces of ferry and road transport, along the roads, at beaches, tourist spots, public buildings and educational institutions.

It is also important that the signage should be both in Konkani and English languages, of proper font size/colour and easily readable with high visibility. At select locations and high traffic areas such as railway and bus stations, signage in Braille should also be incorporated for ease of the visually challenged. Speed limiting plates should also be put up along the highways and even village roads where lack of police surveillance encourages youngsters to zip along at extremes.

Road signage should be coupled with CCTV cameras for effective compliance of motor vehicle rules and deterrence. Hopefully, the new government takes note of these suggestions.
