Garbage disposal in the state has become a major issue and needs to be tackled in right earnest by the government. The only way to go about with it is to introduce the concept of door-to-door garbage collection in a big way by the municipalities as well as the panchayats in the entire State. For this, free garbage-bins should be supplied to the residents and hotels by the respective civic bodies and panchayats.
The government needs to make the garbage bins available and make it mandatory for the municipalities and panchayats to supply these bins to the residents free of cost.
These garbage-bins need to be of a larger capacity and not the smaller ones that are being supplied at present. Such bins should have proper covers and it should be possible to empty these bins mechanically into the garbage trucks without the municipal workers having to handle them. It is pertinent to note that it is absolutely essential to segregate the garbage into dry-waste, and wet waste at the source itself.
The residents as well as the hotel owners should be directed to separate the waste accordingly. For this it is essential to have two different coloured garbage-bins distributed among the residents and hotel owners with the instruction that different kind of garbage should be deposited into the designated differently coloured garbage bins. This garbage bins should then be emptied into different compartments of the garbage truck. It makes no sense for the residents segregating the garbage and the municipal workers depositing all kind of garbage into the same compartment of the garbage truck.
The garbage should be disposed off at the designated garbage disposal sites by treating it scientifically. We need to streamline the handling of the garbage right from the point of collection to its proper and scientific disposal in order to tackle the problem of garbage disposal in the state.
