Municipalities and panchayats are now insisting on carrying out door-to-door collection of garbage, which is good. Every morning, the garbage collectors come at our door-steps to collect the segregated waste. It is observed that the collector later transfers the waste in separate garbage bins with bare hands (as seen in the photo). The garbage could be more than a day old and wet waste, especially, the fish waste could emit a foul stench and carry harmful micro-organisms. This can cause various diseases. The civic bodies and panchayats should provide the garbage collectors with adequate protective gear such as hand gloves, head gear and masks to ensure that they do not inhale dangerous pathogens. They should be provided with a particular uniform to identify them.
