It is observed that a suicide barrier has been provided for the Borim Bridge as seen in the photograph. The government should provide such barriers for other bridges in the state as well.
A suicide barrier is a structure intended to deter people from attempting suicide by deliberately jumping from a high place. Suicide barriers may be placed on high bridges and other tall structures. One may argue that a person who has decided to commit suicide will do so by any other means. However, research has shown that suicidal thinking is often short-lived.
A study has shown that those who attempted suicide and were stopped in the process by another person did not go on to complete suicide by some other means.
A person who decides to jump from a bridge and finds a barrier in place may have a change of mind and decide not to end his/her life. Hence providing bridges and high-rise building is of utmost importance to halt the increasing incidents of suicides being reported.
