A part of the National Highway 17 at Dandeavado, Chinchinim, has given way and one and half feet of the road has descended into the drain by the road side. This stretch was hot-mixed many months back, but was left unattended for some obvious reasons resulting in the caving of the road into the drain.
Telephonic talks and WhatsApp pictures on the social media had quick response. Our local MLA of Velim Constituency and PWD officials saw reason, showed sensitivity and urgency. Within a week, work, concrete embankment for a side walk was started in right earnest and in a record time, a stretch of about 100 metres has been completed.
The unauthorised private culverts were dismantled and also relocated for proper storm water drain. Residents and locals were pleasantly surprised, rather shocked, by regular monitoring, and supervision of the work executed.
It may be noted at the site there were three accidents involving a car and 3 bikes slipping into the drain. Fortunately there were no fatalities but people escaped with minimum damage to self and vehicles. In the immediate vicinity, two electric poles were damaged in ghastly and serious accidents.
We understand that PWD officials suo motu have moved in applications to Electric Dept to shift the poles. Appreciation for swift and immediate action is in order, to EE PWD XIV, MLA of Velim Constituency.
