There is rampant landfilling going on in Sangolda and Socorro right by the roadside and under the nose of the authorities.
Lush green paddy fields have turned red and grey. In various places, multi-dwelling units have cropped up in the green fields and other places roadside restaurants and other businesses have flourished in fields at the cost of nature.
One fails to understand how the panchayat and PWD grant NOCs for electricity and water connections to such illegal structures. While, on one hand, the government says that it is all out to promote agriculture in the state, on the other hand, the authorities just turn Nelson’s eye to illegalities galore in the once pristine paddy fields.
If one takes a cursory glance around the area, one can witness that almost 50 per cent of the land in these villages has been converted. The violators have no fear of the law and with the tacit blessings of the politicians, mother nature continues to be exploited by her beloved children.
It’s time the authorities wake up and put an end to this nuisance and restore the land to its original status by penalizing the wrongdoers.
