During recent days, many serious accidents have occurred on Goan roads, thereby leading to loss of precious human lives. Of course, the matter is of great concern and time has come for us to take precautions while driving vehicles on road. As a matter of fact, each one of us wants to reach our concerned destination quite early. This leads us to increase the speed limit and indulge in unnecessary overtaking as well, thereby raising the possibility of accidents.
In order to be on a safer side, we need to adopt safety measures at all times. First of all, conversing on cell phones as also use of earphones while driving must be discouraged. Driving vehicles under the influence of alcoholic drinks must also be avoided. With the recent excavation work being carried out on the roads for laying sewerage pipeline, vehicle riders need to be more careful, especially during the night.
It is equally important that the concerned authorities lay tar over the excavated area once the work at any location gets completed in all respects. At many places, we watch uneven surface at the excavated areas and this turns dangerous for travellers, more so the pillion riders. Further, some youths are accustomed of riding two-wheelers in pairs. Such a practice is dangerous and turns risky to precious lives.
Further, parents should not allow their children to ride a two-wheeler without obtaining a driving licence. It is also advisable to check tyres and brakes of vehicles on regular basis. Worn-out tyres must be replaced at once so as to avoid any untoward incident on the road. The concerned authorities should install additional traffic signboards, speed-breakers as also pedestrian crossings at sensitive spots. Deputing traffic cops at strategic locations would go a long way in assuring discipline among vehicular traffic. Equally important is that bushes/ branches of trees growing on either side of sharp turns should be cleared regularly so that clear visibility is assured for travellers proceeding along the concerned routes. Last and not the least, pillion riders need to wear a helmet compulsorily. Proceeding in wrong direction/ ‘No Entry’ areas should also be avoided. Let each one of us pledge to obey above tips which would definitely help us to remain safe on the road. The rising number of deaths on Goan roads arising due to accidents must be reduced at all costs.
(NOTE: Seen in the adjoining picture is a sharp turn near Maruti temple at Varkhandem in Ponda where speed-breakers and traffic signboards have been missing for quite long)
