The road slopes are also random without any proper surveying. New garbage trucks are always commissioned with fanfare and “Swacha Bharat” proclamations made but the main Calangute Baga road is full of un cleared litter, cattle dung and piles of debris from road and drainage works.
Soon there will be an epidemic of malaria, dengue etc with authorities appropriating additional funds to tackle instead of supervising the funds spent in prevention. The traffic police clamp down on two wheeler tourists and the newly widened road is used by taxis and rental bikes – two wheelers are parked in parking for 4 wheelers while there is no place for 4 wheelers to park. The road in front of Neelam Grand has large No Parking signs yet even with traffic police at the Sequeira intersection cars are parked all through the day with absolutely no action taken. Two wheelers are double parked with impunity in front of the State Bank entrance causing an inconvenience to customer and obstructing the rickshaws parked at the rickshaw stand.
At the Calangute circle on the left side there was a no parking sign; removed by two or three insolent bike renters/taxis who insist on parking themselves there interfering with proper pedestrian movement. Again under the wide eyes of the traffic police who are often parked at the circle. Cattle dung is found all over the place including adjacent to the outdoor tables of restaurants, in front of the medical store, on the paved newly constructed footpaths. We talk of big projects and development while we are not able to handle the basics.
