The crumbling flight of steps at the main entrance to Sernabatim Beach is a disaster waiting to happen. Sand erosion compounded by bad engineering has led to collapse of the structure and this has been the sweet state of affairs for the past seven months.
Despite it being brought to the notice of the local MLA and government authorities no remedial action has been undertaken. These steps are used by thousands of people daily (tourist season is also upon us) and the day is not far when the whole flight will collapse on some unsuspecting user leading to grievous injury or God forbid, even a fatality.
Other structures and retaining walls on the beach are in a similar state of disrepair, will it take an accident for the authorities to wake up from their slumber?
