I am a regular commuter on the Panjim-Margao-Panjim route, and I have been witnessing and experiencing the traffic jams and subsequent consequences and inconveniences, between Agasaim-Cortalim-Verna areas.
I regularly witness various people relieving themselves by the roadside, stuck for long hours in traffic. One can only imagine what must be happening to heart patients, diabetics, prostate patients, pregnant women, persons with disabilities/special needs, babies, etc. God forbid anything serious happens to any of them. Unfortunately, smooth passage for an ambulance is also a difficulty because of the traffic jams.
This tricky situation is likely to continue for another year at least. It looks like none of the authorities and agencies are able to prevent the severe traffic jams which take place for hours. However, it would at least be the bounden duty of the authorities to provide:
A) Preventive warnings to commuters, especially elderly, those who have diabetes, heart conditions, pregnant women, to carry sufficient/required food/medicines, water provisions with them, and a medical card stating their medical condition, medications being taken and whom to contact in an emergency.
B) Emergency facilities along the route: Drinking water spots, accessible bio-toilets at various locations, First Aid facilities/booths, equipped with trained paramedics/ bike ambulances.
C) Continuous updates of the status of the traffic jams
D) An SOS helpline number. I understand that the Disaster Management plan/modules of the district are not updated for a very long time.
Secondly, I understand that plans for such type of man-made contingencies (mentioned above) are not made.
I sincerely request the concerned authorities to update the plan and as well as include the above systems suggested above. I hope the authorities will understand the gravity of the situation and take urgent steps in implementing disaster management measures.
