This was a step in the right direction as they were old and posed danger to the public and many of such trees had uprooted in the past few months. But then one expected the authorities concerned to replace the trees which were cut down, with new saplings immediately. As a matter of fact, it would have been in the fitness of things to keep the new sapling ready and planted immediately after the old trees were cut down. If this was done the saplings would have been watered by the monsoon rains. But till date the sapling have not been planted. In the past these Ashoka trees would provide shade and provide coolness to the residents of the city. But now with only stubs remaining at several places along the Swatantra path, the citizens are denied the shade and the residents along the Swatantra Path have to live in hot and sultry conditions. Trees are considered as the lungs of the city. With fewer trees around, there is every possibility of the Carbon Dioxide content in the air going up as a result of pollution caused by the emission of obnoxious gases from the vehicles. Lack of greenery also aids the proliferation of mosquitoes. It may be recalled that there were several cases of malaria and dengue fever reported in the city in the past few months. The authorities concerned should have planted the saplings on a war-footing as the saplings will take some months to grow into full grown trees and provide greenery to the city and shade to the citizens. Now with the municipal elections over a couple of months back and the new council in place, it was expected that new sapling would be planted. However till date no action has been taken in this regard even though we are in the second month of 2016. Citizens have to bear the brunt of the hot sun. Things will only get worse in the summer season with the sun rays beating hard. The authorities concerned should take the task of planting the new saplings on a war footing.
