Urgent need for a new market at Birla, Zuarinagar

Zuarinagar has always been in the limelight in the recent past due to the stronghold of the politicians in this area, as it is a powerful vote bank in Cortalim.

Political surprises and stories resembling Bollywood mysteries have emerged due to these voters. As per the pre- election manifesto of late Matanhy Saldanha, one of the developmental works he had promised was the construction of new market complex at Birla, Zuarinagar. But the old Birla market is in the same condition and the promise of the new market complex still remains unfulfilled. The Birla- Zuarinagar lacks a good market complex (inclusive of a vegetable and fish market), library facilities and health centre with proper parking facilities. Currently, the situation of the existing market complex is pathetic with vendors sitting anywhere in the open space without a proper shed. What adds to the problem is the traffic congestion during peak hours with vehicles parked hazardously. The scene of the market place is unorganized, unplanned and the new market complex is the need of the hour. As per reliable sources, Zuari Industries Ltd has already donated 700 sq mts of land at survey no. 188/1 for the new Birla market complex to be shifted. Therefore, for the speedy completion of the project it could be given to GSUDA under the Goa Rehabilitation Board. At the same time, a policy making body should be formulated in consultation with the Sancoale panchayat for the systematic distribution of shops for existing vendors at the new market complex. The local MLA, Alina Saldanha and the Sancoale panchayat should look into the matter very seriously and fulfill the long pending demands of the people by constructing the new market complex at Birla-Zuarinagar with appropriate parking facilities. Whatever be the assurances and promises of the politicians, what matters is the time in which the new market complex is completed.
