Why try to kill the trees in Mapusa?

What I witnessed during my visit to Mapusa’s famed Friday Market last week pained me a lot.

I was dumb-founded when I saw what the Mapusa Municipal Council authorities had done to the huge trees that lined up the entrance to the market and which provided a verdant canopy.

Instead of indulging in a pre-monsoon trimming exercise, the civic council has shockingly gone ahead and ruthlessly cut the branches, leaving behind only the stumps. How heartless can one get? Why didn’t a single councillor intervene and stop the madness?

The shopkeeper I contacted said that they did their best in convincing the supervisor not to cut all the branches, but to no avail. He also added that now the huge trees are as bald at the local politician.

I request the Forest Department to immediately pull up those responsible and take strict action.
