Citizens demand impartial inquiry, want CB or DGP to probe Banastarim accident case

Claim that the law and order situation in Goa has deteriorated; seek immediate measures to secure & safeguard all relevant evidence such as CCTV footage to minimise the risk of tampering with evidence

PANJIM: Expressing serious concerns over the police investigation into horrific Banastarim accident case which snuffed out three lives, activists and the citizens on Monday demanded that the case be transferred from the Mardol Police to either the Crime Branch (CB) or the Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure an impartial probe.

Alleging that that the law and order situation in Goa has deteriorated and that they do not trust in the ongoing investigation, the activists demanded immediate measures to secure and safeguard all relevant evidence such as the CCTV footage, to minimise the risk of tampering with the evidence.

“The PI said the accused was arrested in Marcel while on the other hand, the DySP stated that Paresh was arrested at Old Goa. How can this be possible? How can they arrest one person at two separate places? Secondly, when the car hit the first vehicle, the airbags exploded. How can the lady sit in the driver’s seat when the airbags exploded? Rama Kankonkar, activist asked.

He said, “If the Home Department cannot give justice to its staff, who is a constable, whose parents died in this accident, then how will the Department give justice to the common people? The DGP should personally investigate this case or else should transfer it to the Crime Branch for the investigation.”

“If the police don’t provide justice to the victims, it will set an example that the high profile and rich people manage to escape after committing a crime. This will make people lose their trust in the police which will force them to take law and order in their hands,” he said.

“The contradictory police statements on the arrest of the accused at two places, has compelled us to lose all faith in them. The common man should wake up as we will be the next victims and the police will not even care to give us justice,” said social activist Xencor Polji, who appealed to the people to unite and fight for justice.

“The system has completely collapsed. The Goans should now understand that this government is not at all concerned about the common man. We should throw out this government completely to save Goa and Goans,” a protester asserted.
