Citizens dismayed as wells, natural springs dry up during trial run of Camarkhazan STP

MAPUSA: Locals in Kamarkhazan, Mapusa, suspect that the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) in the area is the reason behind the drastic decline in ground water levels. Tests were underway to

release sewage water into the project, and it was

during this time that locals noticed a drop in the water level in wells.

Vikas Arolkar, Mapusa civic body councillor of ward 8 said, “Locals have told me that wells at Camarkhajan waddo have dried up, along with other natural sources of ground water. Around 14 wells have dried up.”

Locals believe that the machine used to pull the sewage water has also sucked up ground water, which has led to the situation. In addition to wells, springs in the area have also dried up.

Meanwhile, Councillor Arolkar has stated that discussions with officials from The Sewerage and Infrastructural Development

Corporation of Goa will be held to find a solution to

the situation.

It should be noted that some houses in Camarkhazan still rely on natural sources of water, and with the summer season approaching its peak, the recent development during the STP trial run will potentially add to the woes of the locals.
