MARGAO: In a hard-hitting letter to the Member Secretary of the Goa State Pollution Control Board, Citizens of Margao on Friday demanded action against the Margao Municipal Council and Goa Waste Management Corporation for dumping hazardous/poisonous waste in the open land next to the District Court at Margao, despite being aware of the nature of the dumped waste.  The group has also accused the GSPCB of failing to protect the environment.

“As we are still waiting for the test reports of the 3 samples submitted to you by us on November 24, and so also the test reports of the 2 samples collected by your office on December 7, we hereby submit copies of the test reports conducted on the same waste, through the GWMC themselves,” stated the letter.

Savio Coutinho, convenor, Shadow Council for Margao, said they were saddened to realise that the Department, which is supposed to safeguard the environment has stayed mute to the indiscriminate destruction of the environment, despite repeatedly pointing out the same to the GSPCB.

“Due to your inaction or probably with your consent, the MMC and GWMC have once again started dumping the hazardous and poisonous materials near the District Court at Margao,” added Coutinho.  He called upon the GSPCB to exhibit their conscience, and act against this “government-sponsored initiative of destruction of our environment and ecology”.
