CUNCOLIM: The traditional Shigmo festival turned violent at Morpilla leaving eight constables and many locals from two groups injured, on Wednesday night.
Cuncolim police have registered offence against 29 locals under Sections 143, 145, 157, 148, 341, 336, 427, 332, 353, 504 and 506.
For the offence, police booked Biva Velip, Sangtu Velip, Mahesh Velip, Nandesh Velip, Gauresh Velip, Nilesh Velip, Jyprakash Velip, Soptu Velip, Shanu Velip, Suraj Velip, Puno Velip, Ganesh Velip, Chimto Velip, Pramod Velip, Santosh Velip, Ramesh Velip, Kuyro Velip, Punu Velip, Sonu Velip, Krishna Velip, Nilu Velip, Sashikant Velip, Ulhas Velip, Bhiso Velip, Uday Velip, Anant Velip, Janu Velip and Arjun Velip.
One Arjun Velip is the complainant in this case.
Police said that there is a long pending dispute between two groups regarding performing rituals and religious function.
One group objected to the other group led by Sonu Velip and others to enter in muth premises. It is learnt that this dispute was in court and court had permitted Sonu Velip to perform the rituals but it was not accepted by other group.
On Wednesday, the group which was objecting Sonu Velip and group to perform stopped them from entering the muth. When police tried to intervene, the agitated members of the other group started pelting stones on the police injuring many.
Cuncolim police later deployed IRB to maintain law and order. SP Arvind Gawas and Deputy Collector Rohit Kadam visited the spot and took the stock of the situation. PI Wilson D’Souza is investigating the case.
