PANJIM: The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) on Friday announced that the Class XII students’ performance over the last three years or that from Class X to pre-Board exams will be taken into account to evaluate their marks for the current term. The Board is likely to announce the result on July 20.

The GBSHSE released the policy document for tabulation of marks for Class XII Board exams 2021, as per which 40 per cent of the marks will be based on the performance of students in Class XII pre-Board exams, 30 per cent on their Class XI final exams and 30 per cent marks will be based on the best-of-three Class X subject marks.

The Board has also provided the option for the students to appear in the examination, as and when the situation becomes conducive to hold the exams, if they are not satisfied with the assessment of objective criterion.

“The assessment of Class XII will be a composite measure that reflects the student’s performance in school based performance in Class XII and Class XI exams and results of the performance in best three subjects in Class-X Board exams,” the Board said.

Nearly 19,000 students had registered to answer Class XII Board exams 2021, which had to be cancelled in view of COVID-19 pandemic.

The schools are directed to put in place result committee consisting of principal and four senior teachers from each stream.

The Board was of the view that since the academic term, different types of test/exams conducted for Class XII were in online mode due to closure of the schools hence the marks scored in these exams alone cannot be relied upon.

“These examinations were not conducted by the Board and will not meet the goal of standardised assessment and may also reflect subjectivity inherent in school based assessment. This can be addressed by moderation to the school based assessment,” the Board said.

“Therefore, to address the above issues school based assessment at class XII need to be supplemented by standardised examination conducted prior to COVID-19 pandemic situation. The additional information of the performance of the same student to obtain more accurate result will result in impartial, fair, accuracy and holistic assessment of students,” it said further.

The Board noted that the Class X was the only Boards public examination answered by the current batch of Class XII students for actual year-end assessment, when conditions were normal and the examinations were conducted in a regular standardised manner and hence it fits the requirement.

“The results of these examinations may be treated as a measure of student’s ability. However, it is likely that a student may not have been equally interested in all subjects in Class X and may have underperformed in a few subjects. So, the scores obtained in theory (external component) exams average of best three subjects, for the purpose of calculating the marks to be given weightage,” it said.

Further, to understand the students ability to perform at the higher secondary level, the Board felt that it is wise to include result of Class XI in the overall assessment since they were held only a year ago and were based on the prescribed Higher Secondary syllabus and were conducted in settings that approximate standardised examinations.

“Unlike Class X, the examination in Class XI is based on the Higher Secondary syllabus and gives a good indication of students’ ability in their preferred subjects. The examinations were conducted for full duration in examination halls under proper supervision. As a result, this examination has high reliability in terms of fair assessment of students performance,” the Board stated.
